Russian man accused of robbery was not guilty, says lawyer

DENPASAR, mybalinews.com – The Bali Police have release Russian man KA that was arrested for alleged robbery and kidnapping, after he was proven not guilty in the crime act.

His lawyer was speaking on behalf KA to explain what really happen. Edward Pangkahila, a Bali based lawyer, said that that at the time of the robbery and kidnapping incident, KA was overseas.

Edward explained that he accompanied his client during the 24-hour investigation at Bali Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate, where KA answered all questions from the investigators calmly.

“He was calm, not panicking. He answered all the questions,” Edward said on Saturday (1/2).

Edward clarified that they proved his client’s alibi through his passport. After checking immigration records, it was confirmed that KA had not entered Indonesia before the incident.

“We coordinated with Bali immigration and found no record of him entering Indonesia before the incident,” he said.

When the investigators asked KA to hand over his phone for inspection, although he was reluctant because it was a privacy matter, he ultimately complied.

“He gave the phone for examination, and it was found that he was not in Bali. There were records showing he was in Abu Dhabi and Singapore for several days, with chat history and photos as evidence. This strengthened his alibi,” Edward added.

When confronted by the victim, Igor Iermakov, he denied recognizing KA and only assumed that KA was one of the suspects.

“If it’s just because of the beard, there are many people from the middle east who look like that. Unless there are fingerprints,” Edward explained.

“At the end of the 24-hour period, police had no choice but to release him,” he added.

Edward also mentioned that KA was disappointed by the treatment he received, saying that if it had been in his home country, such a situation would not have happened.

“He said to me, ‘Why am I being treated like this? If this were in my country, this wouldn’t happen.’ He was really disappointed,” Edward said.

Edward explained that KA was a former MMA athlete, and this information can be found online.

“He’s probably not active in MMA anymore, but he owns a gym in Dubai where he teaches,” he said.

Edward expressed his gratitude to the Bali Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate for their professionalism and objectivity in handling the case.

“I want to thank the police for being very objective and professional in handling this case,” he said.

Earlier reported that the Bali Police are investigating a robbery allegedly carried out by several foreign nationals against a Ukrainian national. The footage of robbery incident from car dashcam has also gone viral on social media.

The perpetrators are believed to be nine people, mostly Russian. They have robbed cryptocurrency assets worth IDR 3.4 billion from the victim’s account.
The incident is reportedly occurred on December 15, 2024. At that time, the victim (II), along with his driver (initials A), was driving a white car. Suddenly, while traveling along the street in Ungasan Village, South Kuta, Badung, Bali, they were blocked by two cars. An Alphard was blocking the road from the front and another one from behind.

Later on, four people dressed in black, wearing masks and armed with knives, hammers, and pistols, came out from the car. They forced the victim and his driver into one of the cars, handcuffed them, and covered their heads with black hoods.

The perpetrators then took the victim and the driver to a villa. Upon arriving at the villa, the perpetrators was forced to took the mobile phone. They then beat the victim to coerce him into transferring cryptocurrency assets to two accounts believed to belong to the perpetrators.

“The attackers continued to beat and forced the victim to provide his Binance account so they could steal the victim’s cryptocurrency assets worth 214,429.13808500 USD,” he added.

As a result of the incident, the victim suffered injuries to his right ear, both wrists, left hand, left eye, back of the head, and right side of the waist. The material loss was estimated at approximately IDR 3,496,790,194.

Following the report, police have arrested KA at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport for allegedly involve in the robbery. However, police finally released KA after no evidence that proven that KA was guilty. (mybalinews/KAD/ERV)
