DENPASAR, mybalinews.com – Bali has increased alert over foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) after hundreds of animals were found to be infected across Java.

The Bali Provincial Administration has intensified effort to prevent the transmission of FMD on the resort island.

FMD, a highly infectious viral disease that affects hoofed mammals, including cows, goats and sheep, has re-emerged in a number of provinces since the end of 2024, namely West Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Central Java and East Java.

As attempt to accelerate the vaccination program, the government has allocated 170,000 doses of FMD vaccine for Bali.

Currently,17,000 doses have been received which will be used for the implementation of vaccinations in January. This was revealed in a coordination meeting to anticipate Strategic Infectious Animal Diseases (PHMS), Wednesday (15/1).

The coordination meeting which took place in the Sabha Utama Meeting Room of the Bali Provincial Agriculture and Food Security Office was attended by the Director General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Agung Suganda.

Head of the Bali Provincial Agriculture and Food Security Office, I Wayan Sunada, said that Bali had a history of being infected with FMD in 2022 where 556 cows were infected. Of the infected, 553 were conditionally slaughtered and 3 cows died.

Sunada said that at that time the Bali Region was able to quickly resolve FMD cases and received appreciation from the central government.

“As of August 1, 2022, Bali has a zero case reported status for FMD cases,” he said.

Since FMD cases have re-emerged in several regions since the end of 2024, there yet any report of the case on Bali so far.

However, cases that have spread in several regions remain a concern and the Bali Provincial Government is currently increasing its vigilance against FMD.

Sunada is hoping support from the central government and all components of society so that Bali could maintain zero cases of FMD. (mybalinews/ERV)
