BADUNG, mybalinews.com – As attempt to solve waste problem in the resort island of Bali, the provincial administration has planned to build waste to energy plant. Support from the central government is expected.
Acting Governor of Bali, S.M. Mahendra Jaya conveyed the plan during the Bali Waste Management Coordination Meeting led by the Coordinating-Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, at the Pullman Hotel Legian, Saturday (4/1).
Mahendra Jaya said that the Bali Provincial Administration has made various efforts to handle waste, starting from the construction of sites for reducing, reusing and recycling waste (TPS3R), contruction of integrated waste treatment area (TPST), source-based waste sorting, to modern technology.

However, these efforts have not been able to completely solve the waste problem in Bali, while currently the Sarbagita Suwung Regional TPA has experienced excess capacity.
In maintaining public health and the quality of the tourism environment in Bali, Mahendra said, waste management with modern technology is needed as a replacement for waste management using the controlled landfill model.
“We continue to try to ask for support from the central government. It is time for Bali to have Waste to Energy (plant),” said Mahendra Jaya.
Waste to energy
He planned to process waste into electrical energy based on environmentally friendly technology (waste to energy), which is believed to be able to overcome waste management problems in the Sarbagita area.
Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, said that the ministry has prepared regulations and a budget so that waste management in Bali can be realized immediately.
“There is already a Decree from the Coordinating Minister for Food, including the budget. Later, cooperation between the central government, related ministries, and local governments will continue to be implemented as soon as possible, starting today until April, related to waste management, especially in tourist destinations such as Bali,” said Zulkifli Hasan.
Meanwhile, Minister of Environment, Hanif Saifol Nurofiq, said that details regarding waste management efforts in Bali have been discussed with related ministries and local governments.
“We will collaborate on programs at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Tourism, and other related ministries to solve the waste problem in Bali,” Hanif said.
The waste management efforts will involve all related institution, including the regency/city administrations, led the Governor of Bali. In the near future, a policy will be made to address the problem of waste sent to the beaches and seas in Bali.
The coordination meeting to address the waste problem in Bali was also attended by the Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono, Director General of Cipta Karya of the Ministry of Public Development and Housing (PUPR), and the Bali regional leaders coordination forum (Forkopimda).
