Road to Balinale 2026 Brings Cinema, Community, and Cultural Spirit to Sanur

Ahead of the 19th edition of Balinale – Bali International Film Festival, Sanur will welcome a special prelude event, Road to Balinale 2026, on Thursday, 30 April 2026 at Bali Beach Garden Terrace, The Meru Sanur.

Balinale 2026 is scheduled to take place from 1–7 June 2026, with Icon Bali Mall as the main hub, screenings at Cinema XXI, and selected venues across Sanur.

Road to Balinale 2026 is an evening of stories, cinema, and community by the sea, inviting Sanur into the festival journey before Balinale officially begins in June. More than a prelude, it reflects Sanur’s growing place as a cultural host where international cinema, local community, and creative exchange come together in a setting deeply rooted in Bali.

Bringing together the Sanur community and invited guests from hospitality, media, arts, business, and cultural circles, the evening is intended to capture Balinale’s wider spirit of cultural connection and engagement through the world of film — where stories allow us to see life through different lenses, expand our understanding, and draw people closer across places, backgrounds, and experiences.

As Indonesia’s first and only Academy Award® Qualifying Festival, Balinale has strengthened its position as one of the country’s most important international cultural platforms. In 2024, the festival was officially approved as an Oscar® Qualifying Festival, creating a stronger pathway for filmmakers to gain international recognition through its short film competition.

That momentum has continued to grow. Balinale’s official materials state that the 2024 edition showcased 60 films from 25 countries, with 41 premieres. In 2025, the festival expanded further, presenting over 70 films from 32 countries, including 8 world premieres, 25 Asian premieres, and 16 international premieres, alongside 23 Indonesian films. Balinale also notes that the 2025 edition established itself in Sanur, screened the first-ever IMAX 3D in Bali, and hosted 50+ filmmakers from 10+ countries.

Balinale 2026 has built on this momentum with a record number of over 1,300 submissions from around the world, including Indonesia, reflecting the festival’s expanding international reach. Through its official categories, Short Narrative, Narrative Feature, Short Documentary, Documentary Feature, and Short Animation, the festival will present 100 films from 35 countries with 20 World, 10 International, and 26 Asian premieres, welcoming a rich range of stories and cinematic voices.

At the same time, Balinale continues to celebrate the growth of Indonesian cinema, including the emergence of promising young directors, the strength of new voices in fiction and documentary, and the advancing creativity and technology shaping animation and contemporary screen storytelling. More than a showcase, the festival reflects a broader movement in which Indonesian film is gaining confidence, sophistication, and wider international attention.

Beyond screenings, Balinale also continues to contribute to talent development and international creative collaboration. Its official programs include initiatives such as Art of the Score by The Juilliard School, developed in 2021 by Dr. Edward Bilous, Director of the Juilliard Center for Innovation in the Arts, which connects students creating original music for visual media with filmmakers from around the world.

Deborah Gabinetti, Founder and Festival Director of Balinale, said, “Balinale has always been about more than screening films. It is about creating connections, between cultures, between communities, and between people and stories that matter. With Road to Balinale 2026, we are pleased to begin that journey in Sanur, a place with warmth, character, and a strong sense of community. As we look ahead to the 19th edition of Balinale this June, we hope this evening offers a meaningful glimpse of the spirit of the festival and invites Sanur to feel part of what is to come.” Deborah Gabinetti as Founder and Festival Director.

Road to Balinale 2026 also reflects the spirit of partnership behind the festival’s continued growth. In Balinale’s official public announcements, Icon Bali Mall is named as venue partner, Cinema XXI as official cinema partner, and The Meru Sanur as official hotel and venue partner. Balinale’s official communications have also referenced support from the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Creative Economy, the Bali Governor’s Office, and the Denpasar Mayor’s Office, alongside broader endorsement by national and provincial governments.

The 2026 festival schedule already points to another vibrant edition, including Opening Day on 1 June, the Bali Film Forum at The Meru Sanur, an OceanX screening hosted by Bali Ocean Days, Awards Night Celebrations, and an Open Air Closing Event. Together, these moments reinforce Balinale’s character as a festival that combines cinema, conversation, international exchange, and shared public experience.

In this context, Road to Balinale 2026 at the Bali Beach Garden Terrace, The Meru Sanur serves as an early invitation to gather, build anticipation, and place Sanur at the center of a wider cinematic conversation before the festival opens in June. With the ocean nearby and the evening sky above, the event is intended to offer a warm and memorable beginning to the festival season ahead.
