SMAN 1 Penebel’s Double Reservoir Tower: Idep Foundation Encourages Young Generation to Conserve Water

TABANAN, mybalinews.com – A tower with a double 250-liter reservoir can be seen installed in a corner of SMAN 1 Penebel, Tabanan. The multi-tiered reservoir is designed to treat wastewater from handwashing and rainwater for reuse as clean water.

The tower is part of the School’s Tirtanovasi Water Conservation Movement, a program of Bali Water Protection (BWP) run by IDEP Selaras Alam at the school.

In addition to the tower, the Idep Foundation also provided a grant for the construction of recharge wells, which are recharge wells that return rainwater to the ground, and the renovation of a plant nursery. In total, the Idep Foundation provided a grant of IDR 15 million to SMAN 1 Penebel.

This was revealed when the Idep Foundation invited journalists to see the innovations at SMAN 1 Penebel firsthand on Thursday (October 30th).

Putu Krishna Jaya Mahendra (17), a 12th-grade fifth-grade student at the Sispala School (School of Recreation) School, explained that this tower, with its multi-tiered tendons, filters dirty water, containing filters ranging from sand, gravel, palm fiber, and activated charcoal.

He said the results are effective in filtering dirty water to clean it. In fact, the Community Health Center (Puskesmas) has tested the water with a pH of 7, and the resulting water is used for toilet purposes, as drinking water must be boiled first.

“This doesn’t require electricity, and the filter is changed every three months,” said the teenager from Gunung Sari.

Meanwhile, the Sispala Supervisor, Putu Adi Adnyana Negara, also showed off a grant from the Idep Foundation for a recharge well. Built in the lowest area behind the school, this 3-meter-deep well serves to infiltrate rainwater into the ground.

“This well also has a filtration system, so the water returned to the ground is clean. For the measurements, we are currently awaiting assistance with measuring equipment made from solar panels, also provided by the Idep Foundation,” he said.

The Idep Foundation also renovated the nursery, which serves as a plant nursery. “We share the results with the surrounding community,” he said.

Representing the Acting Principal of SMAN 1 Penebel, Ni Luh Putu Agustinawati, accompanied by the Vice Principal of Public Relations, Ketut Wiswana Kusuma, the Vice Principal of Student Affairs, I Ketut Sudarta, and the Vice Principal of Facilities, I Made Sudirta, expressed their gratitude to the Idep Foundation.

“We hope this collaboration will continue. Moreover, one of our students, Puspa, has received a scholarship and pocket money from the Idep Foundation to continue her studies at university. Our students are focused on the environment,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Idep Foundation Media and Communication Officer, Nicolaus Sulistiyo, said that through the media visit initiated by IDEP Selaras Alam in conjunction with the BWP program, journalists were invited to see how innovations born in the classroom have now provided tangible benefits to the school environment and the surrounding community.

“This activity aims to encourage school-based water conservation innovation through a participatory approach. Schools are not only places of learning, but also practical spaces for maintaining the sustainability of water resources in Bali,” he said.

Nico explained that the grant to SMAN 1 Penebel was the result of the Tirtanovasi Competition held in 2024. The school then submitted a proposal, which was approved by the Idep Foundation.

“Idep Selaras Alam designed this activity with a bottom-up and participatory approach, making schools not just beneficiaries, but subjects and agents of change in solving public problems,” he concluded. (RLS)
