Landslide hits spiritual retreat in Klungkung, kills four

KLUNGKUNG, mybalinews.com – Four people were killed due to a landslide that occurred in a spiritual retreat (pesraman) at Banjar Cempaka, Pikat Village, Dawan District, Klungkung Regency, Bali, on Sunday (19/1).

The victims are among eight people at the location when a large rock hit them. Four other victim suffered injuries.

Klungkung Police spokesperson First Insp. Agus Widiono said the natural disaster happen during the bad weather on Sunday. An extreme large rock from the cliff have reportedly slide and hit a wantilan (a traditional Balinese meeting hall) building in the area.

“The location was a treatment area where the owner of the place was treating patients for non-medical illnesses. The victims were patients who had previously been treated there, and at the time of the incident, they were cleaning the area for a ceremony,” said Widiono, Monday (20/1).

The landslide brought down large rocks with a diameter of 5 square meters, hitting the wantilan building and crushing the victims during heavy rain and strong winds. The Wantilan Pasraman building belongs to Jero Putu Wiranata.

“The landslide of the cliff’s rocks hit the house below and buried several people who were in that house,” said Head of the Klungkung Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD Klungkung), I Putu Widiada.

Three victim that were buried by landslide have been evacuated on Monday night. Another one victim has been evacuated on Monday morning.

Head of Denpasar Search and Rescue Agency I Nyoman Sidakarya said that the last victim was buried under fallen trees and rocks from the landslide.

“The large tree was first removed to access the victim, while a safety officer was stationed to monitor the work,” explained I Nyoman Sidakarya on Monday.

“All victims have been evacuated to the Klungkung Regional General Hospital for further handling, while those with minor injuries were treated at the pesraman owner’s house,” Sidakarya added.

The SAR (Search and Rescue) teams involved in the evacuation process included the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, Brimob Bali Police, Klungkung Police, Dawan Police, Samapta Bali Police, Bali Police Forensic Unit, Dawan Military Command (Koramil), Bali Police DVI (Disaster Victim Identification), Klungkung PMI (Indonesian Red Cross), Dawan Babinsa (village military), Dawan Bhabinkantibmas (village police officers), the victims’ families, and local residents.
