RI-France begin discussing transfer of prisoner on death row

JAKARTA, mybalinews.com – A discussion between Indonesia and France has began for the transfer of prisoner on death row Serge Areski Atlaoui.

The Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections held a technical meeting with representatives of the French government regarding the transfer of death row convict in the narcotics case.

The discussion was held in response to the official request letter for the transfer of prisoners that had been submitted by the French Minister of Justice to the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections on December 19, 2024.

The meeting was held at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry at Jalan HR Rasuna Said, Jakarta, Wednesday (8/1).

The French government was represented by Laurent Legodec, Charge d’Affaires a.i. French Embassy in Jakarta. Meanwhile, the Indonesian government was represented by the Acting Deputy for Immigration and Correctional Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Law and Human Rights Immigration and Correctional I Nyoman Surya Mataram, Head of the Immigration and Correctional Directorate General of Immigration Novan Indriyanto, and Special Staff for International Relations Ahmad Usmarwi Kaffah.

In the meeting, the Charge d’Affaires of the French Embassy, ​​Laurent Legodec, said that the French government respects Indonesia’s sovereignty in imposing criminal penalties and will adjust criminal penalties according to the laws in force in France. cConsidering Serge Atloui’s deteriorating health condition, humanitarian considerations are expected for his immediate repatriation.

The meeting participants then discussed the procedures for reaching an agreement to provide a legal framework for Serge Atlaoui’s transfer. Laurent Legodec expressed the readiness of the French authorities to study Indonesia’s proposal to reach an agreement.
