Tabrak, A Clash of Artworks by Made Kaek and Arwin Hidayat at Arma Ubud

UBUD, mybalinews.com – Artists Made Kaek and Arwin Hidayat are  will stake their artwork in an end-of-year art exhibition titled ‘Tabrak’ (Crash) at Museum Arma Ubud, from December 20, 2024 to January 14, 2025.

Curated by Alexander Goetz, the art exhibition was opened on Friday, December 20, 2024, by Museum Arma Founder Anak Agung Gede Rai, culturalist Jean Couteau, and writer Warih Wisatsana.

A number of works by artists from Bali and Yogyakarta presented in this exhibition delve into intuitive visual boundaries, similar to an immersive journey among alternative realities, hybrid creatures, and psychological landscapes.

Although their creative journeys are highly personal and introspective, both are connected through several elements: abstraction, transformation, and the combination of dimensions.

Dian Dewi Reich, founder of Sawidji & Co., in her writing in the exhibition catalog, stated that the works of Made Kaek and Arwin Hidayat invite us into their respective realms, where organic and surreal elements come alive through charged imagery.

“An introspective journey into the subconscious, offering an opportunity to explore the hidden aspects of consciousness,” said Dewi.

‘Tabrak’, or “Crash” in English, immediately draws us into the depths of conscious life. Whether viewed as the subconscious, higher consciousness, or shifted consciousness, this is where raw creative energy emerges.

The title of the exhibition may evoke associations with destruction, contrast, or something undesirable and dangerous. However, it can also be seen as something transformative. When we think of two bodies of water colliding, they merge, becoming one.

Similarly, the collision of Made Kaek and Arwin Hidayat’s creative energies does not signify something destructive, but rather a unification of intuitive creativity presented to us in the same space, combining the same wild energy.

“Both artists quench their thirst from the same river, without permission, without limits and explicit in their own ways,” Dewi emphasized.

Dewi explained that their vision and essence are pure consciousness in visual metaphors. Made Kaek’s enigmatic, cryptic creatures are often referred to as mystical and part of another world. Born from both intuitive and disciplined processes, Made Kaek’s signature creatures carry a wild charm.

Arwin Hidayat’s works share the raw and intuitive form seen in Made Kaek’s work. However, where Made Kaek’s “creatures” stand as individuals, Arwin Hidayat’s figures metamorphose and blend into each other.  (mybalinews/RLS/ANG)
