BADUNG, mybalinews.com – A sperm whale or physeter macrocephalus was found stranded and rotting on Berawa Beach, Canggu Village, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali.

The whale, measuring around two meters long and 98 centimeters wide, was immediately buried around the stranding location or in the Berawa Beach area, on Saturday (22/2) afternoon. The whale was buried using heavy equipment including two bulldozers.

“It has been buried and the burial was witnessed by all related parties,” said head of the Bali Province Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Ratna Hendratmoko as on Saturday (22/2).

He explained that the whale was found stranded on Friday (21/2) evening yesterday or around 6 p.m Central Indonesia Time (WITA). The marine mammal was stranded dead and rotting and swollen.

“The cause of death has not been confirmed, but it is estimated that it was separated from its group,” he explained.

Hendratmoko said that sperm whale
was atype of marine mammal lives in groups or colonies. “When it is separated, it goes to land and has difficulty returning to the middle of the ocean,” he said.

The whale’s age and gender are unknown and when it was found, its stomach and lower body were rotten and swollen and the whale’s tail was gone, and part of the lower jaw was missing and the upper jaw was damaged.

“I express my appreciation to the parties who have reported this incident, and have worked together to bury the animal. The agency also asks for support and cooperation to preserve the sustainability of wildlife,” he said. (mybalinews/KAD/ERV)
